Dr. Lorenzo Merritt was born in Harlem New York to Gladys and Charles Merritt on October 25, 1931. When he was a teenager, his family (Sister Delores and parents) relocated to Portland Oregon where he attended Jefferson High School and achieved recognition awards at the state level in cross country track and field as well as with the Golden Gloves as a boxer. He graduated from Jefferson in 1949 and after returning to New York entered City College and pursued studies in mechanical engineering, obtaining certification as a marine mechanic during his work on aircraft carriers at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
