Helen Nancy Young, 86, passed away Thursday, February 8, 2018. Helen was a resident of Grosse Pointe for almost 50 years. Born Helen Nancy Dinge on April 9, 1931 in East Orange, New Jersey, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in music from Mount Holyoke College, a Masters in Education from Radcliff College, and a Masters in Music from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
While working toward a doctorate at the University of Michigan, she met and married Clyde William Young. They moved to Grosse Pointe Park where she raised her three surviving children: Martha Rose Young, Anne Marie Young Packham, and William Geoffrey Young. In addition to her children, Helen is survived by five grandchildren.
Helen had a lifelong passion for music. She worked for more than 30 years as a music educator, including more than 20 years as an elementary school music teacher for Highland Park Public Schools in Michigan. She was an active member of St. Paul’s Cathedral in Detroit, and later Christ Church Grosse Pointe. She sang in several choral groups: The Cathedral Singers, the Christ Church Grosse Pointe Chorale, and the Oakland Choral Society. Helen loved playing the organ and the piano, and studied with Marilyn Mason at the University of Michigan. She traveled to Europe several times with the Christ Church Chorale and volunteered as a music librarian for the Christ Church music program. She was an active volunteer for Cottage Hospital (Henry Ford) and the Friends of the Grosse Pointe Library, and a supporter of the Church of the Messiah in Detroit.
A memorial service will be held on February 17, 2018 at 11am at Christ Church Grosse Pointe.
