May 18, 1927 - April 02, 2017
Jack Kopp kept a sign in his office: “Old accountant’s never die, they just lose their balance.” On April 2, 2017 Jack lost his balance and passed away from cancer at the age of 89. Jack was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend and trusted accountant, operating Jack Kopp & Associates in Boulder for over forty years. He will be remembered for his intelligence, his strong character and work ethic, his keen sense of humor, his booming laughter and the endless stories from an inspiring, compelling and adventurous lifetime of experience. His memory and revered stories will live with each of those who knew him.
George Alexander “Jack” Kopp was born on May 18, 1927 in Marylebone, England to Georges Kopp and Gladys Bradley. Jack survived the German occupation of France from 1940 - 1945 living in the heart of Paris. Following the war, Jack moved to New York city in 1946 where he worked for Air France and where he met and married Jean Anderson in 1946. Soon after, Jack and Jean returned to her hometown of Wellington, Texas where Jack started preparing his first tax returns in his time off from being the Assistant Manager of the Farmer’s Co-op Cotton Gin. In 1973, Jack and Jean moved to Boulder, Colorado where Jack soon partnered with Harry McDonald to form McDonald and Kopp – the accounting firm that eventually became Jack Kopp & Associates. In 1984, Jean passed away after a long battle with cancer. In 1986, Jack married Norma Hall. They enjoyed many wonderful years in Boulder with family and clients before moving to Morgantown, West Virginia in 2005, and to State College, Pennsylvania in 2009 in order to play a significant day-to-day role in the lives of his three youngest grandchildren – all of whom affectionally called him “Pa.” Jack and Norma continued to commute to Boulder for tax season until 2015 – however, Jack never retired, he continued to faithfully serve his clients and friends until 3 weeks before his passing.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Jean and his sister Helen Kopp.
He is survived and will be greatly missed by his wife Norma, his children (with Jean) George Kopp, Jr., Brad (& Lorrie) Kopp, Catherine (& Jim) Precourt, the children he happily inherited (with Norma), Jeffery (& Fredda) Hall, Michael Hall, and Kristi (& Steve) Branstetter, his 11 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, his sister-in-law Celia Meadors and his beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family. Thank you, Jack, for the lessons, the love and the laughter.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 25th, 2017 at the Erie Community Center, 450 Powers Street, Erie, Colorado at 2:00 pm.
