Dr. Katherine Faye Rhymes Johnson, 87, died March 15, 2017 at her home of 47 years in Yucaipa, California.
Katherine was born August 30, 1929, in Stoneham, MA, to Dr. Lester Harold and Sarah Estelle Rhymes. Her father was a physician studying with a British surgeon at the New England Sanitarium and Hospital. When his course of study was complete, the family moved to the San Fernando Valley, CA, area where Dr. Rhymes set up his medical practice. His wife was a nurse and worked in the practice with him.
Katherine was an alumnus of La Sierra University. On August 16, 1953, she married the late Lloyd Norman Johnson in the garden of her father’s home in Encino, CA.
Katherine and her husband served as missionaries in the Zambezi Union Mission from 1956-1958. After returning home, she worked as a child and family therapist and instructor for Loma Linda University, a licensed psychologist for the Yucaipa Unified and Beaumont School Districts, was a Special Reserve Officer for the Beaumont Police Department, worked for several psychiatric treatment facilities in Southern California area, and for the Department of Defense. She also spent many years in private practice.
Katherine was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Norman Johnson, son, Lloyd Eric Johnson, and brother, Thomas H. Rhymes. She is survived by her daughter, Kathryn Lynn Johnson, and grandchildren, Katherine Estelle Cole and Jonathan Lloyd Cole of Yucaipa, CA, a brother, Richard E. Rhymes, of Columbia, KY, sister, N. Roberta Miller, of Loma Linda, CA, and her honorary daughter Ricki Charlene Reynolds of Webster TX.
Funeral services will be held at the Montecito Memorial Park in Loma Linda at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 2, 2017.
