Our mom Mary S. Lewis made her last journey today, she walks in beauty among the stars. She was an amazing mom, got her PhD while raising 4 kids, and taught at Brandeis University, MIT, Brown University and finally retired at the age of 75 as Professor Emeritus from the University of Pittsburgh.
Her PhD students came from every continent. She sang in the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, performing under the baton of Leonard Bernstein, Claudio Abbado, Seiji Ozawa, and others. She traveled a great deal and brought home the recipes, histories, and cultures of the people she met. She was a fierce advocate for us kids, and for social justice. Her smile was infectious and all embracing.
I can't say enough about what an awesome mother we had. Smart, tough, independent, patient. Qualities that she insisted that all her kids have. She would insist that that we treat everyone fairly and with an open mind. Color, creed, religion, politics meant nothing, how they treated you and how you responded was everything. If you were going to argue then you best have footnotes to back it up! That was the professor! The nature lover taught patience, observe and watch, the researcher taught us to explore and don't stop! The lessons mom taught were endless and I cherished them all, she will be missed
