Michael Benjamin Batlin died suddenly and unexpectedly on Monday, March 26, 2018. He was an inspiration to all who knew him. He was a beloved husband to Judy, amazing father to Melinda (Mindi) McGrath, Daniel Batlin, and Katie Batlin, loving Papa to Paige McGrath, and influential father-in-law to Michael McGrath. Our small angel-dog, Lucky, adored Michael, and brought Michael so much joy.
Michael was born and raised in San Francisco, California. He was extremely proud of being a native San Franciscan, having graduated from Balboa High School, and San Francisco State University. His passion for the retail industry began at the age of 15 when he went to work for Shreve & Co...polishing the brass sign and working in the Shipping and Receiving Department until he was eventually promoted to General Manager of the franchise. From Shreve & Co, Michael joined Macy's where he earned industry-wide respect as the Divisional Head of Men's Footwear. After nearly 20 years with Macy's, Michael was affectionately nick-named the Shoe God. For the next 24 years at The Men's Wearhouse, Michael would be internationally recognized as one of the most influential people in the Footwear industry. Michael considered the community of wonderful people there another family. Michael loved working hard...and occasionally playing poker (ok, regularly playing poker).
Most of all, Michael loved family. He put family above all else. Whether it was spending quality time in Rocklin with Mindi, Mike, and Paige with all of our dogs, helping to support Dan and Katie's thriving wine shop, BUON VINO in Walnut Creek, or traveling the United States to watch Katie play basketball, that's where he wanted to be. He had a wide circle of amazing friends, and a couple of them who were like brothers to him.
The world lost an incredible human being, while Heaven gained another Angel. While all of the loved ones Michael left behind are devastated, we know that he was joyfully reunited with our son, Phil, who was killed by a drunk driver in 2004. They regularly show us signs of love and support from Heaven, mostly in the form of yellow butterflies.
Our lives will never be the same. We will always think of this amazing man as loving, strong, positive, brave, passionate, inspirational, and our hero.
A funeral mass in honor of Michael will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at 10:30 at St. Monica's Catholic Church in Moraga, California. His Celebration of Life reception will follow.
