Bill Japenga was born in San Francisco on December 8, 1953. He was the adored first child of Jack and Laurena Japenga, who were both physicians. Bill grew up in Covina, California and was a 1972 graduate of South Hills High School. He went on to study at Humboldt State University and UCLA.
He lived in Portland, Oregon, with Liz Barrett, his partner of 31 years. An early enthusiast of computers and the Internet, he worked in tech training for ADP and other companies.
He had a steadfast love for dogs (he counted 6 Australian Shepherds as family members over the years) and anything that flies, from remote controlled airplanes to the big kites he piloted on the Oregon beaches. Bill was a sweet-hearted person and many, many, people throughout his life remarked on that quality. Those who helped care for him during his illness mentioned the goodness of his nature again and again. Love was the driving force in Bill's life.
He passed away on February 8, 2018 after a long illness. He is predeceased by his parents and survived by Liz Barrett, as well as siblings Dee Dee Japenga Canzoneri (Ron Canzoneri), Chuck Japenga (Geri Japenga) and Ann Japenga (Christy Porter), as well as his nephews and niece--Jacob, Joseph and Penelope Johnston--and their children.
He will be in our hearts forever. Fly high, Bill!
