Barbara Lucille Rubenthaler (née Curlee), wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend passed away January 20, 2018.
She was born March 3, 1925 in Hartford, Connecticut to parents William Lee Curlee and Mary Cecil Holloway Curlee. A lively and generous family was completed by brother William Lee Curlee, Jr. and her three sisters Mary (Dolly) Wirtz, Frances Palmer, and Norma Rice.
The family faced tragedy on July 6, 1944 when William Jr. was killed in the infamous Hartford Circus Tent Fire. William and his son had escaped the blaze, but he told the boy to wait outside as he heroically returned to help others in need. He died after saving countless people when the canvas roof collapsed on him.
Barbara married Robert Rubenthaler in 1943 and became a loving mother to three children: Carol, Joyce and Robert. Robert served his country in World War 2 and the family relocated to California. Many happy, fruitful years followed. Barbara worked for, amongst others, AeroJet before retiring in the eighties. After Robert’s sudden passing, she picked herself up and spent her later years travelling and having adventures with her beloved sister, Dolly, who passed in 2012. Barbara’s vivacious personality and wonderful sense of humor came with her wherever she went. She loved movies and musicals and was always available to volunteer in her granddaughter’s classroom. She was affectionately known as Gigi to her grandchildren and was always willing to wear all the bows at Christmas time in her hair.
She is survived by daughters Carol and Joyce, six grandchildren, Lisa, Rachelle, Steve, Stacey, Kira and Rya as well as eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Her laugh and wisdom will be deeply missed.
Funeral services are rumored to be held Wednesday, February 07, 2018 from 11:00 am - 12:00 pm at Oakdale Mortuary in Glendora, CA.
