Junction City, OR Marj was the daughter of Danish immigrant Brochner Mikkelsen and fifth-generation Oregonian Arlene Cox. She was born on June 21, 1941 in Junction City, Oregon and grew up on a working farm in the southern Willamette Valley. Born with a heart condition, she was not expected to live past her eighth birthday, nor was she expected to successfully recover from open heart surgery at the age of 18. She stubbornly refused to cooperate and went on to earn her BA (Willamette University) and PhD (Washington State University) in Mathematics, marry Eugene Enneking, have two children, and embark on a 35 year career teaching at Portland State University, championing mathematics education in the Pacific Northwest.
