Born on March 21, 1949, Wendy was the
daughter of Jewel Stein and Philip Levins. Jewel’s mother Ethel was especially
delighted with the new arrival, lavishing time and attention on her, playing
with her and reading to her. Wendy graduated from PS 214, Edward Bleeker Junior
High School, and Flushing High School. Her brilliance showed up early: she
skipped third
grade in elementary school and joined a special enriched music class in junior
high. Sadly, her mother Jewel died of breast cancer when Wendy was only
fourteen years old. After this great loss, Wendy took care of her father and
continued to apply herself to her studies. She received a scholarship to attend
Vassar College, from which she graduated in 1971 with a BA in Philosophy.
